Underclassmen Carry Bears to Convincing Victory

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard leads from start to finish and wins in dominating fashion, 4-0 over Albertus Magnus College in a non-conference game.

The Bears, from the opening whistle, controlled the possession and pace of the game testing Falcon's freshman goalkeeper Griffin Volta early and often.

After a number of shots Coast Guard finally broke the dead lock in 21st minute. Freshman Luke Telang played a ball back to sophomore Caelan Harshaw from the right side of Albertus Magnus's defense. Harshaw controlled the pass and fired a shot on goal from 25 yards out. Volta dove to his right but could not stop the shot as it was deposited in the opposite side netting for Harshaw's second goal of the year.

Harshaw continued to contribute as he found himself on the right side of the field with the ball once again.  He sent a cross into the box from 45 yards out and managed to find freshman Ryan Dandan who was making a run through the Falcon's penalty box. Dandan headed the ball on goal putting it into the left side netting catching Volta moving the wrong way for his second goal of the year at the 40:24 mark.

The Bears picked up where they left off in the second half as Telang collected an attempted clearance by Albertus Magnus at the top of their eighteen yard box in the 65th minute. He passed the ball to Harshaw in the right corner who sent a hard, low cross into the box. Dandan hit the service one time and hammered it into the back of the net for his third goal of the year and his second of the game.

Telang finished off the Bears scoring that night as Dandan split two defenders with a pass and found him in the center of the box. Telang held off one defender and hit a low shot into the right corner of the goal for his third of the year, 70:38 into the game.

Senior Richie Burns made five saves in the win for his sixth shutout of the year and pushed the Bears record to 11-1 on the season. The shutout was Burns 22nd of his career and he is now one shutout away from tying the all time career record at the Academy.

Burns and the Coast Guard defense rose to the occasion tonight stopping a powerful Falcon's offense that had scored 36 goals over their first twelve games. They also held sophomore Alexis Garcia in check who has scored 13 goals of his own this season.

Volta made eight saves in a losing effort dropping Albertus Magnus's record to 8-3-2 on the season.

The Bears return to action Saturday, October 11th, when they travel to Boston Massachusetts to play Emerson College. Game time is 1:00 pm.
