Bears Fall to Lions 2-1

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard took twenty shots but could not capitalize on their opportunities as they fell the too Emerson 2-1 in NEWMAC competition.

The Bears dominated much of the first half as they outshot the Lions 10-1 but they were only able to put three of those shots on goal.

The Bears first opportunity came early in the first half when Senior Liz Runci received a pass at the top of Emerson's penalty box. Runci turned and fired a hard, rising shot that beat Lion's sophomore goalkeeper Melanie Escobar but deflected off the cross bar and out of play.

Coast Guard was on the attack again when junior Hanna Jansson sent a cross into the box from a set piece. The ball bounced and found its way to sophomore Terry Netusil at the corner of the six yard box. Netusil took a one touch shot but sent it just wide of the goal.

Emerson made their one shot of the half count as junior Alyssa Giannone took a high arching shot from just outside the Bears penalty box. Senior goalkeeper Holly Moore rose up to make the save but the bail sailed just over her gloves and into the goal before she could stop it from crossing the goal line at the 21:25 mark.

The Bears tied the game in the 33rd minute when sophomore Alyssa Sato sent a corner kick to the back post. Junior Caroline Eastman was there to meet the ball and head it back across goal where junior Hanna Jansson headed it home for her first goal of the year.

In the second half, Coast Guard again held an advantage in shots 10-4 but they only held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The Lions took advantage of another opportunity in the 70th minute when a cross from the left side found sophomore Elle Wierbicky at the back post. Moore came charging over to cut off the angle but Wierbicky played the ball past her, off the opposite post, and into the net for her first goal of the year.

The Bears had a number of opportunities in the half, but were unable to put many of them on frame.

Coast Guard's best chance came when Runci was able to play a through ball to Eastman putting her one on one with Escobar. Eastman was able to beat Escobar with her shot but it went just wide of the goal.

Moore made one save in the loss dropping Coast Guard's record to 8-7-1 overall and 3-5 in the NEWMAC.

Escobar made five saves raising the Lions record to 5-10-1 overall and 2-6 in the conference. Emerson is now 2-0 against the Bears all time.
