Bears Blanked at Wheaton

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – Kelsee Howes scored 1:49 into the match and that was all Wheaton would need as the Lyons beat Coast Guard 2-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Wheaton won its third straight to improve to 10-6-1 overall and 4-3 in the conference while Coast Guard drops to 8-6-1 overall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC.

Ali Hinton made five saves to record her fourth shutout of the season for Wheaton while senior Holly Moore, who leads the NEWMAC with a Coast Guard single-season record seven shutouts, was again outstanding as she had a season-high 11 saves in the loss.

Kaitlin Montoya added a goal in the 24th minute for the Lyons, which outshot the Bears 27-9.

Bears' junior midfielder Sarah Hills nearly cut the deficit in half in the 54th minute but her scoring bid from outside the box struck the crossbar and the subsequent rebound was later cleaned up by Hinton inside the scoring area.

At the 69:03 mark, Coast Guard sophomore midfielder Katie Clark kept the score at 2-0 by clearing Wheaton freshman forward Caren McCarthy's shot, which was destined to sneak inside the far right post, out of the net for the Bears' fourth team save of their 2014 campaign.

"Suffering this NEWMAC loss today is tough, but the team never gave up on one another and played a nice second half," said Coast Guard head coach Susan Grant. "Holly made some solid saves in the unpredictable wet conditions and the defensive unit worked well together in the second half. Our focus now moves to preparing for a solid outing against Emerson at home on Friday night."

Wheaton is now 17-0-1 all-time against the Bears with 17 shutouts.

Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night when the Bears host Emerson in a NEWMAC game at 5:00 to kickoff Parents' Weekend. Coast Guard needs one win to break the single-season school record of eight wins set by the 2002 team.
