Furry Propels Bears to Overtime Victory

BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman Tyler Furry's goal in the first overtime lifted Coast Guard to a 1-0 victory over Emerson College in NEWMAC Conference play.

The Bears and Lions played to a scoreless draw through regulation. In the eighth minute of the first overtime sophomore Brad McNell passed the ball to Furry at the left side of Emerson's penalty box. Furry put a shot on goal and his blast found its way into the bottom right corner for the game winner.

"Furry showed excellent composure in finishing his chance," commented Coach Chris Parsons on Furry's overtime winner.

It was tightly contested all through the game as the Lions outshot Coast Guard 10-9 however the Bears held the advantage in shots on goal 6-2.

Coach Parsons was happy with the hard fought win saying, "It was a tough day and surface to play on. We struggled to create chances, but in the end, a freshman got the job done for us again."

Senior Richie Burns made two saves in the win pushing the Bears record to 12-1 on the season and 3-1 in the conference. This is Burns seventh shutout of the season and the 23rd of his career. With this shutout, he is now tied for the all-time career shutouts record at the Academy. Burns is still undefeated on the season at 11-0, and he leads the conference with a 0.35 goals-against average and seven shutouts.

Junior Carter Bowers made four saves in the loss dropping Emerson's record to 3-6-3 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC conference.

Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, October 18th when they travel to Worcester Massachusetts for a NEWMAC Conference game with WPI. Game time is 11:00 am.
