Bears Swept in Regular Season Finale

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/21/12)--Babson hit seven home runs with three players each going deep twice as the Beavers swept a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader from Coast Guard and moved all the way up to the second seed for the conference tournament winning the opener 8-4 and completing the sweep with a 13-8 win in game two.

The Beavers improved to 23-16 overall and finish conference play with a 10-6 record while Coast Guard drops to 20-16 overall and end 8-8 in the NEWMAC.

Coast Guard will be the sixth seed and play third seeded Wellesley on Tuesday at Babson at 2:30 pm with the winner playing #2 Babson at 4:30 p.m. in the double elimination tournament.

In the opener, Junior Catie Funk hit a three-run homer in the third as the Beavers took a 3-0 lead. Coast Guard got two back in the fourth on a two-run shot by freshman Chloe Harmon.

Babson scored three more in the fifth as Funk ripped two-run double and senior Nicole Latini followed with an RBI single for a 6-2 lead.

The Beavers added two insurance runs in the seventh as junior Jackie Enos led off with a homer and sophomore Kelly King added an RBI single to make the score 8-2.

Coast Guard scored twice in the home half on an RBI double by senior Maddie Buchert, who then came around on an RBI ground out by junior Holli Bastinck to close the scoring.

Sophomore Tess Rubega (10-4) got the win in relief as she worked 3 2/3 innings allowing five this and two runs, both earned, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Coast Guard senior All-American Hayley Feindel (13-7) took the loss. She went six innings allowing seven hits and six runs, three earned, while not walking a batter and striking out ten.

Funk was 2 for 3 with five RBI's while senior Kayla Davis added two hits and scored a pair of runs in the game one win for Babson.

Buchert was 3 for 3 while sophomore Devin Fellman had two hits in the opener.

In the nightcap, Funk was 4 for 4 with a solo homer and four runs scored while
King and sophomore Sam Pilkington had a pair of homer and finished with three hits each to lead the Beavers.

Babson scored five runs in the third on a two-run homer by Pilkington and a three-run blast by King before adding five more in the fourth as Pilkington hit another two-run homer, junior Ashleigh Phelps had a two-run single and sophomore Christa Shorette was robbed of a homer by center fielder Kaitlin Ward and settled for a sacrifice fly to give the Beavers a 10-0 lead.

Sarwinski had a two-run double in the fourth to get the Bears on the board, but a two-run homer by Kings in the fifth made the score 12-2.

Coast Guard had a five-run fifth with Harmon and Sarwinski hitting back-to-back homers, Harmon's was a grand slam and the Bears trailed 12-7.

Funk homered in the top of the seventh before Ward homered in the bottom of the seventh to close the scoring.

Freshman Jesse Richardson had three hits and scored a pair of runs in game two for Coast Guard while Sarwinski had two hits and three RBI's.

Freshman Meghan Hayes (6-4) was the winning pitcher as she started and then came back to get the final two outs. She worked a total of four innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out two.

Junior Catherine Walker (7-9) went the distance and took the loss for Coast Guard.
