Godiksen Goal Leads Bears to Opening Night Win

Box Score

BUZZARDS BAY, MASS.--(9/2/11)--Senior Brett Godiksen's goal in the 13th minute of play lifted Coast Guard to a 1-0 non-league win over Massachusetts Maritime in the season opener for both schools Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

After a strong start by the host side, Coast Guard settled down and started to dictate the game. Off a free kick served by sophomore Kyle Grell into the box, Godiksen scored off a feed from senior Kevin Noll.

The Bears continued to control play and after a beautiful combination between Godiksen and freshman Tradd Lovern, sophomore Matt Epperly looked to have made it 2-0. However, he was deemed off sides.

After the break, Coast Guard again thought they had extended the lead to 2-0. Off a corner, Freshman Trey Chamberlain smashed a shot to the back post where Godiksen finished his second. Again, the play was ruled off sides, this time, not by the linesman, but by the center official. A third goal was disallowed with minutes remaining, and Coast Guard survived some late pressure by MMA.

Junior Greg Kennerley and senior Sean Stadig were especially strong on the day in the center of defense for the Bears, and six freshmen made their debuts in the match.

Junior Will Leffler, making the first start of his career, made four saves in goal to record both the first win and first shutout of his career.

Sophomore Brett Young made six saves in the setback for the host Buccaneers (0-1), including a pair of point blank stops on Godiksen in the final 22-plus minutes of play, as the Bears outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 9-6 margin for the match.
