Shelton Goal Helps Bears End Winless Streak

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/18/11)--Senior Shannah Shelton scored the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute as Coast Guard snapped a six-game winless streak and won their first conference game of the season by beating Smith 1-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

The Bears snapped an 11-game winless streak in conference play dating back to last season as the Bears were 0-10-1 in their last 11 NEWMAC games.

Coast Guard improves to 5-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play while Smith drops to 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the NEWMAC.

The goal was Shelton's team-leading fifth of the season. Sophomore Judy Hooymans added her second assist of the season on the goal for Coast Guard.

Senior Mary Mills needed to make just one save to register her fifth shutout of the season and tenth in her career.

Senior Lindsay Gregor had ten saves in net for Smith.

Coast Guard outshot the Pioneers 19-6.

The Bears kept their chance of a berth in the NEWMAC tournament alive with the win. The NEWMAC tournament takes the top six teams. Coast Guard is currently tied for eighth place with two conference games left.
