For his performance this past weekend, Nicholas Reeser of Coast Guard Sailing has been named the COASTGUARDATHLETICS.com Athlete of the Week, presented by First Command. This weekend Nicholas Reeser finished in first place at the New England Conference Singlehanded Championship for the Monotype Trophy hosted by Brown University. This win automatically qualifies Reeser for the 2023 ICSA Singlehanded National Championship.Â
The New England (NEISA) Singlehanded Championship is the most competitive singlehanded regatta in the conference and is also the most heavily weighted regatta for National Championship selection in this discipline. Reeser competed in an extremely deep field of 35 competitors including members of the Olympic Development Program, and top-five-finishers at International Youth World Championships.
Reeser won the event with a 21-point lead on the second-place finisher, which in this competitive fleet is very impressive. On day one of the regatta, six races were sailed in windy and challenging conditions. Reeser finished day one in third place, 18 points behind first place. On day two of racing, a total of five races were completed. Reeser sailed extremely well and was able to advance to the top of the fleet by sailing consistently and only placing out of the top three in one race. Â
With this win, Reeser automatically advances to the National Championship which will be hosted by Tulane University on November 11-12. The rest of the Nationals field will be selected in mid-October.
