Patrick Irwin

Patrick Irwin is a California native who made his way to the Coast Guard Academy after an initial year of civilian schooling. Desiring to make a larger impact, Irwin applied and arrived in New London as a cadet in the summer of 2016. He has called Connecticut home for all but two years since then.

After a two-year stint aboard the USCGC MACKINAW out of Cheboygan, Michigan, Irwin made his way back to New England as an Officer Candidate School (OCS) Instructor, stationed onboard the Academy. He enters his second year in that role, as well as in a volunteer assistant coaching role with our program, working specifically with our heavyweights.

As a cadet, Irwin was a two-time NCAA National Qualifier at heavyweight for the Bears. In 2019, he made the Blood Round of the Championships, falling one win shy of All-American honors. In 2020, Irwin had his best season yet, going 30-1 heading into the NCAA National Championships where he was the #2 seeded wrestler at the weight class. Those Championships were ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Irwin finished his career an NCAA First Team All-American, a two-time NCAA Northeast Regional Finalist, one-time Champion, a two-time Scholar All-American, as well as Team Captain for the program. In high school, Irwin qualified for the California State Championships in his senior year, while also running Cross Country.
