Men's Rowing

A Second, A Win, and a then a second and fourth

WORCESTER, Mass. --

CGA men's rowing was at Lake Quinsigimond for the first time this year and we had beautiful weather to get in our races. As 1/c Zac Gamble (Waterford, CT) said, "the first of three weekends on the Quinsigimond." Let's hope the next two are as nice.

The first race of the day included the first varsity boats from CGA, WPI, BC, UMASS, and Connecticut College racing for the McGee/McCarthy/McGee Cup. CGA was not able to match pace with WPI as they slowly moved out to 4.2 second advantage at the finish. CGA held off BC by ½ a second followed by Conn College and UMASS. WPI retains the McCarthy/McGee cup that was presented by Tobin McGee this year.

The 2V was the second race of the day and was a four boat between CGA, WPI, BC and Conn. The 2V has started to find a powerful, driving rhythm and after a controlled start they were able to establish that rhythm, pulled ahead, and in 1/c Gamble's words they, "maintained their lead through a gritty finish" for the win 1.6 seconds ahead of the second place WPI crew with BC and Conn following.

Our 3V and 4V both competed in the 3V eight race with boats from WPI, BC, and UMASS. CGA was the only team that had a fourth eight. This was the first experience for some of our rowers, and for our fourth eight coxswain 4/c John Mills, to race on a fully buoyed racecourse with stakeboats at the start. That was an opportunity that will pay dividends next week when we return to Worcester to race in the New England Championships. The fourth eight had a great start to lead the field off the line, but they could not match the sustained speed of WPI, our 3V, and BC. The 3V was more conservative off the line but pushed into second and tried to chase down WPI. It was a solid row for both boats and a building block.

It is hard to believe it, but up next is the New England Championships on Saturday 2 May 2026. We will be launching out of Regatta Point Park in Worcester, and we hope to see parents, alumni, and friends at the park!
