NEW LONDON, Conn. —
Alaina Stonebraker (Salt Lake City, Utah) and
Brendan Fant (East Lyme, Conn.) of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy track & field team have been named the CoastGuardAthletics.com Athletes of the Week, presented by First Command, for their performances during the week ending on Sunday, December 7th.
Both cadet-athletes put forth record-setting performances on Saturday, December 8th, at Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Stonebraker was especially exciting, setting two new Academy standards with her times of 57.08 in the 400-meter dash and 25.17 in the 200m. Her time in the 200 was good for third place in the meet and surpassed the previous top mark of 25.46 set by program legend
Michelle Kwafo '23.
Fant's big moment came in the 3000m, where his time of 8:29.31 took down the 22-year-old record set by
Ian Bartonicek '03 by 0.03 seconds. Brendan is now be the second Fant to have his name displayed on the Gregory Field House record board, joining his father and current indoor high jump record holder
Joshua Fant '98. Joshua set his top mark with a 2.13 meter (7' 0") clearance in 1997.
Stonebraker, Fant, and the Bears track & field team will have the next few weeks off due to the holiday break, but they'll return to action on January 17th in the self-hosted CGA Winter Invite #1.
