Unangst Wins ICSA Sportsmanship Award

At the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) announced its Hall of Fame Individual Award Winners with Dan Unangst receiving a top honor of Sportsman of the Year.

The Robert H. Hobbs Trophy is awarded annually to the Sportsman of the Year. The trophy honors Robert Hobbs (MIT '64), past Executive Vice President of ICSA, past President of U.S. Sailing (1992-1994), and former chair of the U.S. Sailing Olympic Committee. The Hobbs Trophy shall be awarded each year to the sailor that best exemplifies the Corinthian ideals of sailing. This sailor has made contributions to College Sailing through his/her efforts, by competing, promotion of the sport, fostering sportsmanship among teams, maintaining quality of competition, and contributing to the overall performance of College Sailing.

The award is selected from nominations from sailors and coaches. Unangst is known by his competitors to be honest and sincere on the water. An excerpt from Unangst's nomination stated, "Daniel was selected as the recipient of the Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award as he embodies the true spirit of the award...He is rarely seen around ICSA regattas without a smile on his face, even if things didn't go his way on the racecourse. Daniel is greatly respected by his competitors."

David Thompson, Head Dinghy Coach, said, "As a coach, I am thrilled to have Dan win this award and have him recognized by ICSA for his outstanding sportsmanship. In a sport which relies on self-policing, having the respect of your peers is crucial and Dan sets an example for all to follow."

Unangst remarked on receiving the award, "I'm incredibly grateful to receive the Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award. My sailing career has centered around my love for the sport and learning as much as I possibly can. Being at the Coast Guard Academy has allowed that passion to grow and given me so many opportunities to learn, to share, to compete, and to have fun. Winning this award was the perfect ending to my career and I am so thankful to everyone who gave me a reason to smile."
